Authenticity in Action: How Reparando Inspired a Movement of Change

Reparando

We founded Athentikos in 2008 as an act of gratitude. Guatemala, the birth country of our adopted sons, had given us an immeasurable gift—our family. In return, we sought to give something back. But we had no idea just how far this journey would take us.

Through Athentikos, we produced “Reparando,” a documentary that started as a simple expression of appreciation for our sons and their heritage. We never anticipated the profound impact this story would have. Since its release in 2010, “Reparando” has inspired audiences worldwide to take action—donating hundreds of thousands of dollars, volunteering their time, and committing resources to mission organizations working in Guatemala.

To be completely transparent, we did not expect this outcome. But we’ve learned that even the smallest step of faith can lead to results that exceed our wildest imaginations. Reparando was never just a film; it was an invitation to be part of something greater.

Why Stories Matter

Many organizations share stories, but we have always prioritized authenticity. Authenticity is not about polished perfection or curated narratives; it is about truth. It involves recognizing strengths and weaknesses, defining limitations, and embracing the power of community.

When we tell real stories—stories that embrace the mess, the struggle, the brokenness as much as the hope and redemption—we create space for others to step in. Authentic stories don’t just inform; they invite. They move people from spectators to participants. They stir hearts, ignite passion, and awaken a sense of responsibility.

The Unexpected Realization

At first, we believed our mission was to make a difference in underserved communities worldwide. While that goal still holds, we quickly realized a humbling truth: we aren’t doctors, lawyers, or engineers. We’re creatives.

And for a moment, we wrestled with that. Would creativity be enough? Could art, storytelling, and film truly make an impact?

The answer, we discovered, was yes.

Rather than trying to become something we were not, we chose to lean into our true selves. We embraced our creative instincts, trusting that our stories could inspire others with diverse strengths to take action.

And it worked.

Doctors, lawyers, and engineers—individuals with skills and resources we could never have provided—responded to Reparando. They came forward not because we asked them to, but because they recognized their connection to the story and understood the role they could play.

An Invitation to Be Part of the Story

We often assume impact requires expertise, but Reparando taught us otherwise. It isn’t about having the perfect skill set—it’s about showing up with what you have and offering it to something greater.

For us, that offering was creativity; for others, it might be medicine, law, advocacy, or education. But together—each of us bringing our whole selves—we create something far more powerful than we could achieve alone.

And that’s the beauty of authenticity. It reminds us that we don’t have to be everything—we only need to be ourselves. When we fully embrace who we are, we create space for others to do the same.

Who are you, and how might your true self bring light to the world?

Cynic Gym

Cynic Gym is an eclectic modern rock band that started in the early 1990s as Chocolate Houses. During a late-night rehearsal, a college music professor named Jim, barged in and demanded that the volume be cut by 50% or for the band to “forget about it!” The band forgot about it, but did not forget about the incident and changed their name to Cynic Gym in honor of the infamous professor.

Mantra Artisan Ales

In early 2015, brewers Derrick Morse and Chad Frost set their sights on historic Franklin, Tennessee as the home of Mantra Artisan Ales. Derrick, out of Boulder, Colorado had been brewmaster of a local brewpub for the past few years, creating a complex array of intricate beers earning him the nickname of “mad scientist.”

Chad returned to Franklin from a professional brewing program in Berlin, Germany. With the news that a local brewery would be vacating their facility to expand, Morse and Frost jumped the opportunity. Joining forces with chef Maneet Chauhan, the Mantra team set out to create premium, worldly-inspired artisan beers.

For us, drinking beer should be a curated experience that provokes a conversation.

conflict resolution

We cannot remove pain and conflict from our story, but we can change how we respond to it. I AM ART connects our personal story to God’s greater story of redemption, so we can rest in the peace of our true identity: Art of the Great I AM.

One of the most important parts of a story is the element of surprise – the twist in the plot that illuminates deeper meaning. Cognitive psychology recognizes the importance of the “discrepant event”: something with an unexpected outcome that is remembered because it engages our brain, encouraging problem solving and critical thinking.

I AM ART uses the surprise of conflict in a creative process to help us process the conflict in our personal story through external symbolism. This process allows us to safely explore conflict and challenges us to think about our healthy responses that will help heal trauma.

Athentikos

Scott & Amelia Moore founded the nonprofit, Athentikos in 2008 to authentically give back to Guatemala, the birth country of their two adopted sons. After wrestling with infertility for over a decade, Scott and Amelia adopted two sons, Micah and Elliot. During their adoption process, they learned about Guatemala’s tragic history and met children who were still hurting. They couldn’t just adopt their sons and move on with their lives. They had to respond. So, they decided to use their creative talents to tell a story. That’s how it all began …

Humulus Project

The brewers at Life Is Brewing developed a new line of India Pale Ales that did not fit into the existing brand catalog, so I developed an entirely new branding imprint called the Humulus Project. Everything about this brand is bold and demands attention. The design jumps off the shelf, the copywriting is introspective. This brand is designed to be enjoyed without distraction at the end of the day as you reflect on things that matter most.

Branding

Rethink Humulus Logo

The Humulus logo is derived from the Humulone molecular structure, an organic acid, is a bitter-tasting chemical compound found in the resin of mature hops (Humulus lupulus). Humulone is a prevalent member of the class of compounds known as alpha acids, which collectively give hopped beer its characteristic bitter flavor.
